Central Air Conditioning Freon

Freon

Freon and refrigerants are regulated by the E.P.A., and in Arizona only technicians licsensed by the Registrar of Contractors may perform work on central air conditioning systems. What this boils down to is that only a technician licsensed by the Enviromental protection agency, and the registrar of contractors may recharge an air conditioner with freon.

This does not apply to all refrigerants, such as those in automobiles. Below is a list of HCFC's that are either regulated or banned by the enviromental protection agency.

R-22 - Currently in use in most air conditioning systems installed on homes today. The government tax on this substance is being raised steadily every year, and due to the cost it is recommended that you replace a system using R-22 for one that utilizes R-410A.

R-401A - Blend containing R-22.

R-402A - Blend containing R-22.

R-409A - Blend containing R-22.

R-502 - Blend containing R-22.

R-12 - This used to be the standard used in air conditioning systems, appliances, and automobile cooling systems. It is no longer legal to produce or to buy.

R-134a - This is the replacement for R-12 and most systems can be retrofitted to use R-134a. This substance is not regulated strictly and can be bought freely.

R-410a - or R-410 is the new standard in refrigerants. This is more enviromentaly friendly and should be the choice for most newer applications. This is also known as Puron, which is a carrier branded name.

It is strongly recommended that any leaks in a cooling or heating system be found and repaired immediatly. This will prevent ozone harming gasses from being released into the atmosphere, as well as saving you money from future repairs.
